Cape Cornwall profile

Britain isn't known for its capes, sunny headlands that make you think more of the Mediterranean. In fact it only has one, nestled away at the very tip of Cornwall not far from Land's End.

It was here that Ernie Keddie and Una Handley came in May 2002 when they purchased Cape Cornwall Golf and Country Club, a stunning course poised on the edge of the ocean, surrounded by iron and bronze age settlements and old mine workings.

"Up until then my career was in computer sales management," Una explains, "So this was a bit of a departure. But we both fell in love with the place and knew it had huge possibilities for the golfer."

The Club needed a great deal of hard work and investment to bring it up to scratch. New equipment and a fleet of new buggies were purchased, a new head green keeper was appointed, and the fairways were expertly shaped to add extra interest.

All the work has paid off. The ss68, par 70 course is one of the country's more intriguing with lies on undulating land and dry stone walls which cross the fairways. It's so well drained there's never a need for winter greens.

"It's a truly special course," Una enthuses, "Quite demanding and beautiful to play. We knew we had something unique here, but we're now getting bookings from all over the world."

In just ten months Una and Ernie have developed Cape Cornwall into a golfer's paradise with accommodation, an excellent restaurant and a fully kitted health club including sauna, solarium, gymnasium and 45 foot indoor swimming pool.

But their plans are greater still. Key to the Club's future development is its impressive website with numerous views of the facilities and an online booking service. You can find it at www.capecornwall.com.

"Obviously we're a little out of the way," Una laughs. "But that's never a problem for the serious golfer!"
